I noticed there's a thread for weight lifting but not body weight exercises, so I thought I'd fix that.
I personally base my workouts on body exercises mostly. Why? Well mainly because these are exercises you can perform anywhere and anytime, I find it's much easier to workout when I'm not dependent on equipment. There's no time invested on simply traveling to a gym and there's no money invested in personal equipment, the body is all that is needed for a good intense workout.
A big advantage that I like about body exercises is that it's less difficult to injure yourself as opposed to weights, now that doesn't mean it's foolproof of course, it can still cause injury with poor form and technique.
Another advantage is that you are working a variety of muscles with body exercises, where as weights will isolate certain muscles or muscle groups.
A downside with body exercises is that some of the best do require some kind of equipment, such as pull ups and chin ups, you will obviously need something that is above your head to grab onto for these.
A good article on body weight exercises from Lifehacker.
That article also links to some websites with great workout plans by a man named Steve Speirs. One of the more popular ones being the 100 Push Ups. I personally have attempted this one and it worked well for me. It's a great place to start for beginners.
Some people tend to avoid body weight exercises in favor of weights because they want to build muscle but there are still plenty of body weight exercises that can be very effective at this, like the Muscle Up or Handstand Push Up, for good list of more advanced body exercises, check this out.
My personal workout routine involves push ups, knuckle push ups, and dips. It's mostly just upper body workout right now but I plan to add more to it over time for core and lower body. I do core body workouts too, just not as regularly as my upper body workout.
