Because technology would never do us wrong
There's tons of smartphone apps that make running much more fun or easier, especially for the runner that gets easily bored or the beginner yearning for some structure. Having an iPhone, I'm limited to only listing iOS apps, so if some Android/Windows Phone peeps know some running apps exclusive to their system, please please post them.
Zombies, Run! ($7.99) - That price might look big, but only if you compare it to it's (inferior) counterparts in the App Store, but how much would you pay to get your unmotivated self pounding the streets three times a week? Zombies Run is a gamification of running, where while jogging down Electric Ave. you can hear the story of the Abel Township, the oasis of humanity in a zombie wasteland, and run around picking up supplies for them while constantly getting ambushed by zombies. It's a whole bunch of fun, and the story is so captivating that you can't help but want to go for another run as soon as your finished with your mission.
Zombies Run! 5k Training ($3.99) - Yep, they even made a Couch 2 5k trainer for this thing, a perfect running app for beginners! Couch 2 5k, is a catch-all term for just about any running system that gradually gets more intense, turning the couch potato into a 5K runner in about 9 weeks. In this app, Zombies Run basically injects its style into the program. I've only played this to get some more grasp on the story of the original Zombies! Run game, but at least for me it's very glitchy and so I'm hesistant to recommend it.
Couch-to-5k (1.99) - For those beginners who are not sold on the idea of zombies chasing you everywhere, or annoyed by the glitchiness of the Zombies 5K app, there are tons of alternatives. This is the only one of said alternatives, however, that I've ever bought. Besides lacking undead, this is different from the Zombies app in how they work you out. For example, in Week 1 of the Zombies app, they make you do 15-second bursts before ending with a 10-minute free-run, while in this app they make you alternate between 1-minute runs and 1.5-minute walks. Personally, the latter is more satisfying to me.
Bridge-to-10K ($2.99) - But if you finish the 5K app? What next? The bridge-to-10k of course! Although I've never used this app and thus can't testify for it (went straight from 5K to ZR), this app pushes you to graduate from running 5Ks to being able to run 10Ks in just 6 weeks, which is pretty dang cool.
