What better pony way to start out the day than with oats and apples! As far as those two ingredients are concerned I use my favorite apple, a Honeycrisp (Sorry Big Mac), and quick-cooking oats. Quick-cooking oats are somewhere in between traditional rolled oats and instant oats, in terms of cooking time and nutrition. The less processed your oats are, the more fiber and protein they tend to have.
Ingredients:
2 C. Water 1 C. Quick-cooking oats 1 Apple 2 T. Dark brown sugar ½ T. Cinnamon
Directions:
Bring the water to a boil and add the oats. Turn the heat to medium and let cook for 5 minutes (Or however long your directions indicate), stirring occasionally. While the oatmeal is cooking, slice the apple into bite-sized pieces. After 5 minutes, take the oatmeal off the heat and cover for 2 minutes. Add the cinnamon, dark brown sugar, apple pieces, and mix them all together. This dish serves 1 – 2 ponies.
If you want to spice it up a bit, I add a dash of nutmeg, allspice, cardamom, ginger, and homemade vanilla extract. Perfect additions for autumn flavor!

Made this today with some mcintosh apples and some Quaker oatmeal, some awesome stuff. Going to have to try the one with all the spices sometime too, only threw nutmeg at it this round.

I made something similar to this today, only half as much, in a microwave and with a banana in it (mainly because a banana is easier to peel and chop than an apple, where you have to bother with de-coring and whatnot).
Lazybones Oatmeal 1 unit of steel-cut oats (I used 1 decilitre, about half a cup, you use whatever works for you) 1 unit of water (same here) 1 unit of milk one banana cinnamon some brown sugar, if needed
Put oats into bowl, add milk and water, stir together, microwave for 3 minutes on full effect. While it's cooking, peel and chop the banana into a size you like. Then, stir down the banana into the oatmeal when it's done, add the cinnamon and maybe sugar, eat.
I'm lazy and my stove's slow to respond, so the microwave is wayyyy easier and saves me from having to wash whatever I'm stove-cooking the oatmeal in. You all probably know about microwave oatmeal, and I really recommend it. Using half milk and half water when cooking it will make it taste nicer somehow, I can't really pinpoint exactly what makes it taste better but it is something. Traditional Swedish rice porridge is cooked with milk and my mother used to make me oatmeal cooked with milk when I was a kid, so maybe that's why I like the milk addition.

I don't peel my apples. The skin is where all of the nutrients are located. As far as coring, I usually cut around the core (It will look square after you are done).
