Now that the cold is getting stronger, many people may have a tendency to stop their usual physical exercise routine due to the colder temperatures. Leave it to a lack of proper indoor equipment or a general hate for the cold overall, but there are plenty of ways to make your outdoor exercise excursions not only more tolerable, but fun!
The key to having an enjoyable workout in the cold is all about your attitude and, most importantly, how well prepared you are. No matter the activity you should be as properly dressed and equipped as Rarity on a ski outing (Fainting couch not recommended).
So here are some professional and personal (I myself run at temps as low as -20ºF) tips for staying warm!

- Plan you workout! Know where it is you are going, and how long you’ll be exposed to the elements.
- Dress warm! Even if you are sweating and getting hot with all those layers on, its crucial to keep them on for your workout. The body has difficulty working in colder conditions, and being ill prepared in temperatures even as high of 40ºF can put a person at risk for injury.
- Avoid cotton clothing as it absorbs sweat and freezes. The ideal choice of fabric is lightweight polypropylene. The more layers the better. Great outdoor clothing can be bought at most athletic stores, but good long johns can always so the trick too!
- Wear a hat! The most important part of your body to protect from the cold is the ol’ nogin! Most heat escapes from a person’s head, and ears are also incredibly exposed to frost bite!
- Good gloves and a warm, THIN, pair of socks to keep the toes dry.
- A positive attitude. Be ready to get in shape, and get in a hot shower later!
