Now you're probably thinking "Uncle Ganey, I know you are the wisest most awesome sentient organic being ever second only to Minty herself but you can't be suggesting video games can be healthy for me, AND fun." well yes, they can be. Video games get a bad rep of being unhealthy for you due to the adictiveness of them and people stereotyping gamers as all being over weight or out of shape. However this is simply not true, on their own there is nothing wrong with games, and they can be a great way to keep happy and even keep you motivated, however that's not what this thread is to discuss.
This thread is to discuss games that get you to get up and move and/or help you live a healthy life style and believe it or not there are quite a lot of these! Let me start the thread off with a personal favorite of mine.
[glow=red,2,300]Dance Dance Revolution![/glow]
This game is AMAZING for getting up and active, all while being fairly entertaining and adictive. On top that you can find DDR machines in arcades everywhere. But I'm getting ahead of myself "What exactly is DDR, Your Amazingness?" I hear you asking. Well the premise of the game is very simple, in fact you can probably guess it from that Gif up there, arrows move to the top of the screen to the beat of music and you have to step on the corresponding arrows on a pad on the ground called a Dance Pad. It sounds simple but it can get fairly complicated and, On some of the harder difficulties, very hard.
These guys put a bit of flair into it!
The game is available on most current gen consoles, but I prefer getting it for the PS2 as its cheaper, and those where generaly the betters days of it IMO, however the game requires a Dance pad to play. You wont be able to find these at every game store but its not entirely uncommon and worse case you can order them online. If you don't feel like investing in a game and controller but still want to get in the action, or you have a surplus of quarters that you need to get rid of, these are pretty common in arcades. As a added benefit of playing it in a arcade people are generally fairly impressed by someone even moderately good at the game, its a great self esteem boost. However I still suggest the home version as they actually have a mode for weight loss and exercise, that takes into account every step you've made (even the wrong ones) and tells you how much you've worked off!
"But Sir Uncle Ganey, The great, how can I play this amazing game AND fulfill my craving for ponies at the same time"
Well...
You see there is something I neglected to mention about DDR, there exist a free version entitled Step mania that supports the dance pad, and allows for people to make custom song for it. Bronies did here what they do best, invade stuff, a little bit of searching can find you plenty of Brony music to go with you dance expirance. Just keep in mind they are sometimes not designed to be done with a dance pad on this .
Step Mania can be found here, www.stepmania.com/
It can be played with a keyboard but I highly suggest you find a dance pad you can plug into your computer for this (using a converter or USB pad)
Some Tips for starting out:
Don't get discouraged:
You're gonna fail, quite a bit, that's normal, if you aren't failing at all, or at least if you aren't have some difficulty, move on to songs that are more difficult.
Don't stay in the middle:
The Number one thing I see new people do wrong when they try out this game is that they return to the center whenever they can. This is bad form, and while can work for a new player for a while, it wont get you anywhere later on.
Recognize Patterns:
These arrows don't appear at random, they appear in patterns, patterns that often show up in many songs.
So that's all about that for now, if anyone has any question about DDR or anything to add about it feel free.
Also if you have any info on other good healthy games, of any type, feel free to post about them here, I know there are plenty more out there
